Documents you need to send money to India from the US
Before your first transfer, it helps to have a few things ready — your own ID, your recipient's bank details, and a sense of the limits and tax basics. Here's the checklist.
Draft outline. Scaffolded with SEO tags and a section skeleton. Ships
noindex until written. Replace the TODO notes, remove the noindex meta tag, and uncomment its sitemap.xml entry.
What the sender needs (KYC)
TODO: Why licensed services verify identity, and what's typically asked:
- Government photo ID (e.g. driver's license or passport).
- SSN or ITIN, and sometimes proof of US address.
- A US funding source — bank account (for ACH) or debit/credit card.
What you need about the recipient
- Recipient's full name as it appears on their Indian bank account.
- Bank account number and IFSC code (or UPI ID, depending on the payout method).
- TODO: Note account type — NRE / NRO / resident — and link to NRE vs NRO.
Transfer limits
TODO: Explain that limits come from a few places — the service/partner's own per-transfer and annual caps, and the receiving side's rules. Keep this factual and note limits vary; don't quote specific numbers you can't verify.
Tax basics (not tax advice)
TODO: High-level only — the US gift-tax reporting idea for large gifts, and that money received in India may have tax implications for the recipient depending on relationship and amount. Add a clear line: consult a qualified tax professional.
